| Our Kaiser Permanente Medical Center is expanding
to serve our growing community
South Sacramento and Elk Grove continue to grow, and our Kaiser Permanente
Medical Center is expanding, too. To meet the health care needs of the
growing community, we have begun a major expansion of our medical center
that will increase its size by one-third, and enhance our ability to
provide trauma care. When completed in 2010, our expanded medical center
will help ensure that residents and visitors in the south county area
are able to get the care they need, when they need it, close to home.
The expansion will include the following:
- Five-story hospital tower with 136 beds, including 20 new intensive
care beds, increasing the capacity from 162 to 290 beds.
- Expand the emergency room to 28,300 square feet and 41 bays.
- Two-story outpatient surgery center with six additional operating rooms.
- Special trauma follow-up care center located near the emergency room.
- Helipad for critical life-flight care.
- 882-space parking structure.
We will also expand our community emergency room to meet the community's increased need for critical emergency services. As a community hospital, our emergency room is open to all needing emergency care, regardless of their ability to pay or whether they are a member of Kaiser Permanente. We are pleased to have been designated by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors to operate an Adult Level II Trauma Center to serve the residents of the South county. We expect to provide this critical, life-saving service to our communities in 2008. As a community hospital, our emergency department - which is the busiest in south Sacramento - is open to all needing emergency care, regardless of their ability to pay or whether they are a member of Kaiser Permanente. Our $300 million expansion currently underway will enhance our ability to provide trauma care.
One of the first phases of construction will be a four-story parking
structure. It will be built on the
northeast side of the campus on lots 3 and 4 to provide easy access for members to their medical
appointments. Construction will start this summer and take about one year. We are providing free
valet parking weekdays in lots 1- 5 on the north side of the campus
until the new parking garage opens.
The expansion will also provide more convenient pick-up and drop-off
areas and improved traffic circulation for patients and visitors to
the hospital and emergency room. Some of this work will require periodic
changes to our internal roadways, parking lots, and entrances to the
campus.
We will update our Web site throughout construction so that you can stay informed about any changes.
The expansion is the latest in a series of projects that help Kaiser
Permanente meet the needs of our growing communities. A specialty medical
clinic opened next to the South Sacramento Medical Center in 2004, the
Elk Grove Medical Offices opened in 2003, and the emergency and radiology
departments were expanded in 2001.
